Spring Cleaning for your Vehicle from Tom Smith Chevrolet
With the recent nice Ontario weather, it feels more like spring every day. What should we do with our vehicles for the spring? Spring cleaning is very common to do with our homes, but we should also do it with our vehicles. I’ve created a list of 5 things you should do to get your car ready for the spring.

1) Tire Swap
Now that the winter and those icy roads are gone, we can swap the tires out for our all-season or summer tires. Start calling the service centers and booking your appointments, as the tire centers will become busier. They can also recommend to your which tire would be best, if you are needing some new tires for the warmer months. Visit our Tom Smith Chevrolet service center to get your tires swapped.

2) Oil and fluids
In the winter, a thinner and lower-viscosity oil is used for the engine, however in the spring you should replace it with a thicker and higher-viscosity oil. An oil change in the spring will help guarantee that your engine has clean oil and free of any debris that could cause issues. While getting the oil replaced, you should check on the other fluids for your vehicle, coolant, brake, and steering fluids. Make sure that the coolant is a standard mix of 50% water and 50% coolant.

3) Clean your vehicle-inside and outside
Like I mentioned before, spring cleaning isn’t just for your home. With all the salt, sand, and slush on the roads, it takes its toll on our vehicles. You will need to give your vehicle a good cleaning on the inside and the outside. Grab all those mats and throw them outside to hose them off, then you can get into the carpets and make sure all the salt and sand is gone. Another key spot to clean would be the under carriage of the vehicle where all the slush and salt will go when you are driving. Also clean the headlights well and make sure there are no cracks in them. If you are a busy person, or don’t have the space to clean the vehicle yourself, you can make an appointment with our detailers here at Tom Smith Chevrolet and they will clean your vehicle from top to bottom and make sure it will be ready for the summer.

4) Air and hoses
Another key thing to check and prepare for the summer is your air filter and hoses in the engine. According to Chevrolet, they recommend changing your filters every 30-45,000 miles. If you live in a dustier area or drive in terrains that have more severe conditions, then changing it more frequently is recommended. While you are checking your oil, fluids, and air filters, look at the hoses, for example the radiator and cooling hoses for any signs of cracking or swelling that could cause leaks and other issues.

5) Check battery, brakes, blades
The last things I would check would be the three B’s, battery, brakes, and blades (wiper blades). The usual cold temperatures of winter here in Ontario take a toll on battery performance. You should get your battery checked to see how it is performing and whether you will need to change it.
The brakes should be checked every 6 months or 20,000km and spring is a good time to get them checked when you are getting your tires replaced. The brakes can be damaged by the salt on the roads, and you don’t want to have any issues when you are trying to stop.
Finally, the last B, is the wiper blades. With all the ice and snow that your wipers have been clearing or if you leave your vehicle outside during the winter, the wiper blades may be damaged and should be checked. It is recommended that you change your wipers every six months to one year. While you are checking on everything else, inspect the blades and see if they are worn and you can replace them easily enough.

If you follow these steps to prepare your vehicle for the spring, you should help with your vehicle’s maintenance and life. If you have any questions or concerns, please come visit Tom Smith Chevrolet in Midland Ontario to book an appointment with our service advisors to get your vehicle inspected and be ready for the spring and summer.
